Memorial Day Parade on Pine Avenue
These tasty, easily prepared burgers come from my Mom’s old recipes for her special deluxe hamburgers. They were always an eagerly anticipated treat at my house when I was a child. These delicious burgers are simply fantastic! The unique flavor stands on it’s own, so there’s no need for mustard, catsup, or relish (of course you can still add them if you like). Make sure you try these mouth-watering hamburgers on your own kids!
Frying is best but burgers can be baked, broiled, or grilled. Add sliced cheese, lettuce, & tomato. For a milder taste, use blue cheese dressing instead of crumbled blue cheese.
Festivals of Little Italy Niagara
For years Pine Avenue in Niagara Falls NY has been a source for traditional Italian style festivals and events. Originally St. Joseph’s Church on Pine Avenue would hold various Italian/Religious festivals. The oldest festival that still exists today is the St. Joseph’s Day Feast. This Sicilian based feast is held every year on March 19th. Several restaurants and churches in the area such as the Como Restaurant and St. Joseph’s Church hold the annual feast. The feast features dishes of fish (pasta con sarde’), macaroni and various breaded vegetables. Also special bread that is baked at DiCamillo Bakery on Pine Avenue is a major part of the feast. The bread comes in the shape of a cross or a Shepard’s hook and it is given to each and every patron of the St. Joseph’s Day Feast. Another festival that is unique to Little Italy Niagara is the annual Soppresatta Festival. The event is held every year in May. This event features homemade soppresatta (a meat similar to pepperoni but tastier) from around the neighborhood and WNY/Southern Ontario region. “Old timers” bring their soppresatta and homemade wine to the Como Restaurant for everyone to sample and judge. Approximately 1100 people attend this event every year. Finally, every first Saturday and Sunday in August the Pine Avenue Business Association (PABA) holds the annual Little Italy Niagara Italian Festival. This two-day (August 4&5,2007) event attracts thousands of visitors from across NYS and the USA. The Italian Festival allows visitors to sample the local tastes, smells and traditions of Italian Americans from Niagara Falls NY. Also PABA sponsors free concerts every Thursday at the Gazebo on Pine Avenue in the heart of Little Italy Niagara (7-9pm). So please come to Little Italy Niagara and see “Where the Old Country meets the New World.”
